AI in Our VFX Workflow

AI-assisted tools for repetitive work. Artists for every decision that matters.

A plain account of where AI fits in RotoEdge’s pipeline, where it doesn’t, and how your footage is handled.

The Short Answer

AI Assists. Artists Decide.

RotoEdge uses AI-assisted tools to take on repetitive parts of VFX production. Creative decisions, quality control and final approvals stay with our artists on every shot.

Rotoscoping, paint & cleanup, keying, matchmove and compositing are detail-driven crafts. Some of that work is repetitive, and that is where assisted tools help. The judgement calls — how an edge should hold, whether a cleanup reads as invisible, when a shot is ready to deliver — are made by people.

AI-Assisted

Tasks Where AI Helps.

These are the areas where assisted tools support our artists. Every output is reviewed before it moves on.

  • 01

    Workflow automation

Repetitive steps in shot preparation and file handling are automated, so artists start on the shot itself sooner.

  • 02

    Cleanup assistance

Assisted tools can propose a first pass on suitable cleanup tasks. An artist then checks and refines it frame by frame.

  • 03

    Smart mask generation

Rough masks can give rotoscoping a starting point. Final mattes are built and refined by artists, with attention to edges and motion.

  • 04

    Pipeline optimisation

Automation helps keep versions, hand-offs and deliveries organised across a project, reducing manual admin.

Artist-Driven

What Stays With Artists.

Anything that decides how a shot looks, or whether it is ready, is artist-driven.

Assisted output is a starting point, never a deliverable. An artist owns every shot from brief to delivery and is accountable for what leaves the studio.

Always artist-driven
  • Creative decisions on every shot
  • Edge refinement on mattes, including hair and motion blur
  • Final paint and cleanup
  • Quality control, frame by frame
  • Final approvals before delivery
Task by Task

Who Does What.

How the work divides on a typical shot. The balance varies by shot, and some shots use no assisted tools at all.

Stage of a shotWhere assisted tools may helpWhat the artist does
Shot preparationOrganising incoming files and repetitive set-up steps.Reviews the plates, references and notes, and plans the approach.
RotoscopingA rough mask as a starting point on suitable shots.Builds the final shapes, refines edges, hair and motion blur frame by frame.
Paint & cleanupA first pass on suitable cleanup areas.Completes the final paint so the fix holds up in motion and reads as invisible.
Quality assuranceKeeping versions and hand-offs organised.Checks every frame for accuracy and consistency.
DeliveryAutomating packaging steps in the pipeline.Approves the shot before it leaves the studio.

Assisted tools are judged by one test: does the shot end up at least as good, with an artist’s time spent where it matters more? Where a tool doesn’t pass that test on a given shot, the artist works without it.

Tools We Build With

Pipelines We Develop.

Two areas where our team builds and explores new ways of working.

  • ComfyUI Pipelines

    Custom Automation.

We build custom ComfyUI workflows that automate repetitive production tasks and process assets, while artists keep full control of the result.

    Used for
    • Custom workflows
    • Asset processing
    • Repeatable results
  • Unreal Engine

    Real-Time Production.

With Unreal Engine, we explore real-time rendering, virtual production, environment development and cinematic visualisation to support modern filmmaking.

  • Human Review

    Artists Sign Off.

Whatever tool starts a task, the same review applies at the end: an artist checks the shot and approves it before delivery.

Your Footage

How Client Footage Is Handled.

AI-assisted tools are used within the security requirements agreed for each project.

Every project runs under an NDA, secure production workflows and controlled access. Client footage is used only for the client’s project. If your production prefers that no AI-assisted tools are used on its shots, tell us during scoping and we will plan the work accordingly.

What It Means for You

Same Standard. More Time on Detail.

Assisted tools change how time is spent on a shot, not how the shot is judged.

  • Identical QC

Every shot passes the same quality assurance stage of our five-stage process, whether or not an assisted tool was used on it.

  • Time goes to detail

Hours saved on repetitive steps go into the hard parts: fine edges, motion blur, invisible cleanup and consistency across a sequence.

  • Transparency on request

Ask which tools are used on your shots and we will explain. You can also set your own requirements during scoping.

FAQ

AI Workflow Questions.

Does AI replace your artists?

No. AI-assisted tools handle some repetitive steps. Creative decisions, edge refinement, final paint, quality control and final approvals are done by artists.

Which tasks are AI-assisted?

Workflow automation, cleanup assistance, smart mask generation and pipeline optimisation. Assisted output is always reviewed and refined by an artist before it moves on.

Is the quality check different for AI-assisted shots?

No. Every shot goes through the same quality assurance stage, and an artist approves it before delivery.

What do you use ComfyUI and Unreal Engine for?

We build custom ComfyUI workflows to automate repetitive production tasks and process assets. With Unreal Engine we explore real-time rendering, virtual production and environment development. In both cases, artists stay in control of the result.

Can we ask you not to use AI tools on our project?

Yes, raise it during scoping. We will plan the work around your production’s requirements and tell you if it changes anything about the schedule.

How is our footage protected when AI tools are used?

The same way as any other project: under an NDA, within secure production workflows and with access limited to the assigned artists. Client footage is used only for the client’s project. See security & confidentiality.
